[ He's sitting in bed, sipping his coffee and eating a sandwich for a lazy Sunday-off-from-work breakfast when he sees it - right there on the front page of the Genessia Tribune, the proud announcement of Nova City's robot fighting league. The logos of the teams are colorful and magnificent, yet to Cassian it's like a punch in the gut.
And then again, since he knows Kay must have seen the newspaper already, having brought him breakfast, newspaper included.
He bites down on his bottom lip and lets the newspaper drop onto the bed. ]
[Kays is sitting close to Cassian, on the side of the bed that's reinforced and equipped with his recharge station. He's fidgeting with the ports of his left arm, seemingly distracted.
He's seen the news and wasn't exactly pleased by them but he didn't want to burden Cassian with his annoyance. Not when they finally have a quiet day to themselves. when his name is called, he turns to face his boyfriend, voice soft.]
[ He hesitates for a moment. Maybe he hasn't noticed? No. No, that's silly, hopeful and utterly dumb. He's a droid. Droids don't miss things that are right in front of them like that.
Cassian sizes him up, how he's looking very busy and very normal for all the world... He sighs. He places the tray on the bedside table and reaches for Kay's right elbow, hooking his thumb through the ring joint. ]
I'm sorry.
[ His voice is just as soft. It's not fair, all of that. That ugly world out there shouldn't have a place here in their bedroom where Cassian likes to sleep in a recharging droid's arms, where they whisper secrets and fears and bashful love confessions to another. It's not fair. ]
[He considers playing dumb for only a nanosecond. It's impossible to miss the article and Cassian knows him well. Instead, Kay closes the open panel in his arm and twist a little to face Cassian better.]
Thank you...I thought things would be different here.
[ He scoots a little closer. He's bare-chested, the orange-red Starbird tattoo on his upper arm - matching Kay's - standing out bright on his skin. His gaze flickers to the ring on his finger. It really should be different here. It is and yet...
What's he even supposed to say to make it better? "Not all humans"? That's cold comfort. ]
[For a moment, Kay wishes he was int he android body. That way he could pull Cassians close without his frame making the other man cold. But moving to fetch it now would run the moment so he just nods slightly and lowers his head a bit.]
I know. [He's never been surer than anything in his life.] I'm lucky. It's only that not everyone has someone like you to help them.
[If it was possible, Kay's core would be melting. He shifts some more to wraps an arm around Cassian but with the other hand puts a pillow between his side and the rebel's chest. At least no pointy corner will dig into Cassian's skin as they hug.]
Thanks, love. Me too. I don't like going to Nova City, everyone looks at droids as if they're just things. it's worse than in our world. They don't even have a Droid rights movement.
Wish we had a chapter of the Organization for Droid and Machine Abuse here. It's weird not having one.
[ Even if only giving him the stink eye for having reprogrammed his droid partner. Still a part of life.
With the pillow cushioning him from any sharp pieces of metal, he can press close. He wraps an arm around Kay's narrow waist. ]
Nova is nice enough but it's... [ Maybe it's like Coruscant was before the Empire, but it's got all the nasty sides of it, too. ] Schnee did some good but I'm not sure I trust his intentions. And laws don't change how people feel or think.
[Kay would argue with them if that happened. He appreciates their concerns but Cassian did it for good reason. He hold Cassian close, basking on the comfort.]
It's strange that Nova has nothing similar, considering how many droids live there. Perhaps, if it existed...
[But they already have their arms full dealing with Attleton and the problems caused by Guardian in the other cities, on purpose or by accident.]
[ It's not his place to tell Kay what he should or shouldn't be doing, that is a matter among robots, but... He can show he's here for him. He chuckles softly, nose smushed against Kay's shoulder. ]
I would bake cookies nobody there can eat.
[ Because every Attleton community thing involves at least one person bringing cookies so there? ]
[They're very used to it but usually, usually, they don't start it. Kay optics dim and his chest rumbles. Cassian is too good to him and it gets Kay laughing.]
[ He brushes a kiss to the yellow ring at his shoulder and tucks his head under Kay's chin. This is nice. Oh, but he loves slow mornings like this one. The topic they are discussing is anything but happy but he is happy, feeling safe and sheltered and loved. If he could he would choose to never leave their attic sanctuary - especially in these days, in which the outside world feels like an increasingly hostile place. ]
I bet it would bring trouble. But some things are worth the trouble.
[The discussion is of a serious matter but, much like Cassian, Kay feels content and at ease. He knows there's no one else but Cassian he could voice this concerns to and not be dismissed or ignored. Other humans might even have gotten offended or wary. But not Cassian, never him. He sees him as his equal and shows it when it matters most.]
I love you. [It's earnest and sincere and perhaps a bit out of the blue but Kay needed to say it.] And I'd like this same happiness for others like me.
[ It shouldn't come as a surprise, he knows that Kay loves him but when he says it, it still hits Cassian like a sledgehammer. But a good sledgehammer, if there's such a thing. There is. He's feeling it right now, he's looking it, too, as he twists to face him, all wide dark eyes full of wonder. Cassian catches Kay's hand again and interlaces their fingers. ]
You... [ He presses his forehead to Kay's. Cassian exhales slowly, eyes closed. Yes. Yes, this is it. He knows it always deep down but then there are the moments when his heart beats so loud and just... ] I want to keep making you happy. Helping others will make you happy.
[He can't smile but the joy is still palpable in his voice. Cassian' fingers get a light squeeze back.]
Hm, look at us now. Who would have guessed life, or afterlife, would be like this?
[So fulfilling, so happy. With troubles and stressful situations still but those helped them too in a way, to keep their minds sharp and their senses trained.] With so many friends too. And talking about that, we got the permit for our home remodeling. I can start making the house bigger as soon as I have the construction materials.
We do need that. [ His voice is pitched to a soft murmur, sweet tones which are normally reserved for when he is cajoling people to trust him... or when it's just him and Kay, and it's all real. ] We have a large and ever growing family.
[ And what miracle is that? Back at home, Cassian had never thought of himself as a family man - he had been a loner, living life at the edges of his herd to better protect it. Now he was right in the middle of it. It was still terrifying when he let himself think about it.
Cassian tilts his head a little, a playful smile curling the corners of his lips upwards. ] You're very good to me. Building us a larger home. [ It was for Sonico and Demyx, too, of course, but... Well. It was sweet. ] This time we get to decorate the bedroom together, as a couple.
[Kay knows that tone of voice and sometimes it's still difficult for him to tell if it's sincere because Cassian is really good at his job. But not being able to tell doesn't mean he's not sure Cassian wouldn't use it with him. So he enjoys the murmurs and melts a little against the man's side, looking down at him.]
I can't get rid of you now so I might as well make sure that you enjoy your living space. [It's for the others too, of course, since that's one of the reasons why the house now feels so small but the fact remains. It's his home.]
Oh? Can we keep this bed, though? [Kay runs his fingers up Cassian's thigh.] Plenty of good memories go with it.
[ His breath hitches at the light touch. Oh. Ooooh. The smile he shoots Kay is nothing short of coy. ]
Very good memories... [ He leans in close to whisper into his "ear", never mind that's not how Kay's audials work, but it's a matter of principle anyway. Of principle and having an excuse to ever so casually mold himself against his lover. ] I especially like the ones that have you coming undone for me on this bed... you make the loveliest noises.
[ He's ever so trying to stifle his smirk. It's only fair. Kay has started it and he knows Cassian doesn't like to lose. ]
